Asus and Microsoft announced two new handheld gaming devices: the ROG Xbox Ally X and the ROG Xbox Ally a couple of months ago. These devices are a result of their collaboration to combine Asus hardware with a custom version of Windows 11 that should feel incredibly familiar to Xbox users. These handhelds are now available in Nepal as well, so let's take a closer look at the Asus ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X, including their features, specifications, official price, and availability.

Asus ROG Xbox Ally Series Overview

      Software experience

As I mentioned before, both ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X run a custom version of Windows optimized for handheld use. The interface includes a new Xbox full-screen mode designed for controllers.

It supports games from Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games. Microsoft is also working with developers on a game verification system. Both devices will come with Xbox Game Pass and a new version of Roblox. Gaming Copilot is also included but was not highlighted as a major feature.

      Performance

The performance is where these two differ big time, though. So the ROG Xbox Ally X features the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, while the regular Xbox Ally comes with the Ryzen Z2 A processor. It might not sound like much of a difference, but that Ryzen Z2 A chip is seriously underpowered.

First off, it's only a 4-core / 8-thread CPU (versus double the number of cores and threads on the Z2 Extreme). What's worse is that the Ryzen Z2 A has AMD's much older "Zen 2" CPU cores and "RDNA 2" graphics instead of the newer "Zen 5" CPU and "RDNA 3.5" GPU on the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. So, unless you only plan on playing light, indie games, you'll definitely wanna skip the Xbox Ally.

In addition, the Xbox Ally X offers 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of storage. Meanwhile, the regular Xbox Ally comes with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of storage.

      Display

Both models include a glossy 7-inch IPS LCD panel with 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The displays are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus and include DXC anti-reflection coating. There is no OLED option on either device, but they do come with 100% sRGB colors, 500 nits of brightness, and AMD FreeSync Premium support as well.

      Controls

The hand grips on both models are based on the Xbox Wireless Controller design. The control layout is similar to older Ally models but now includes an official Xbox button. And you'll also be glad to know that they both use L & R Hall Effect analog triggers.

      Ports and Connectivity

Both versions include two USB-C ports (including one Thunderbolt 4 connection for the Xbox Ally X), a headphone jack, and a UHS-II microSD card slot. Whereas wireless connectivity options include WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.

Meanwhile, the ROG Xbox Ally X has a larger 80Wh battery, while the Xbox Ally has a 60Wh battery. And that bigger battery means the Xbox Ally X is slightly heavier too (715 grams > 670 grams).
